Our Story

Ours is a love story with the happiest of endings. Since we were both kids we dreamed of one day living in Mexico, and in 2019 our dreams finally became a reality. We packed up our lives in the States and with our two boys left the frigid cold of another Northern winter and headed south to warmer climes and a culture that made our hearts sing.

Mexico to us has always been a calling, the warmth of the people and the openness of their hearts and souls. Their passion for craftmanship and tradition, and their pride in carrying on these traditions despite the relentless push of modernity. As artists and creatives we have always felt a deep and visceral connection to this way of life, and immersing ourselves and our family full time in it was the first of many of our dreams that has come true.

We knew we wanted to make tequila before we moved, but we never realized quite how deeply the process would touch us once we began the remarkable journey of finding a tequilero to work with. We went to numerous distilleries and tried hundreds of different kinds of tequila, some good, some, well, not so great. There were moments of bliss and moments of awkwardness when we wondered if dumping a shot in the potted plant was rude…

What carried through though was a defining sense of pride and of timelessness. Centuries of tradition passed down from generation to generation. This is what we wanted to harness. This love. This dedication to craft. This integrity. This passion.

Finally, after months of driving around Amatitán and going to every kind of place you could possibly imagine – from a farmer’s shack to a state of the art distillery that looked like it could fly you to the moon if you had the launch codes, we finally found our family.

We didn’t have a strict set of guidelines for who or what they would be – we just knew we’d know when we found them. We had a few preferences that we really hoped to find in our producers, but as this was not our country and not our craft we went into every experience with an open mind and an open heart hoping to be surprised.

Then we found them. Young and passionate and bursting with energy, a couple like us with whom we formed an immediate and what is becoming a lifelong bond. All of a sudden we were entranced. Their love for the agave plant and the magical process that turns it into tequila was intoxicating. Their deep respect for the women in their community who make up their workforce and are paid an above industry standard wage resonated deeply with us. Their commitment to sustainable production whilst maintaining centuries old traditions jibed so perfectly with our own sustainable ethos. In a world where tequila is rapidly growing in popularity, the stringent standards by which it has been made for generations are all too quickly falling by the wayside and what they were doing not only felt right, but tasted right.

When we took our first sip we knew our search was over. It was heavenly. Beyond heavenly. We went around with a bottle of our preferred tequila at the time – a popular top shelf brand anyone who drinks tequila in the States will know – and with a sympathetic look in their eyes they took it from us and brought out an unlabeled bottle of their own. What followed changed the course of our lives, and after three years of working together to create our own tequila we are proud to share with you our three expressions, each made with passion, love and dedication to the time honored craft of which this country is so deservedly proud.

For us, making tequila was a huge gamble. There were definitely a few people who told us we were crazy. It took all of our money and when we tried to get a loan for the rest we were turned down time and time again. We knew what we had created was going to be a success and we wanted so badly for it to work, not just for us but also because we believed so strongly in our newfound family who was producing our tequila. Like us, they were the unknown David in a world of Goliath’s, standing strong by their principles despite enormous pressure from the mega tequila factories that produce hundreds of millions of bottles a year and have long abandoned the traditional and sustainable practices which are the benchmark of this time honored craft. We dreamed together about making a tequila that would show the world what making a great tequila was all about. That it’s more than agave that goes into the bottle. It’s the reverence for the craft and the support and respect for the communities that also matter so much.

Thankfully our really good friend believed in us and partnered with us to bring you Sueños Global Tequila. He believed in our dreams and believed in us and knew that  with some help and support we would be able to turn our dream into a reality. We didn’t have a name yet for it but out of this process our name was born. Sueños, for dreams. As it was our dream that came true, and by buying our tequila and believing in dreams you are helping others around the world realize their dreams too. We have set up our own grant program that will award grants to artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs who otherwise would not be able to get funding to realize their dreams. So thank you to everyone who has been with us on our journey so far, and a heartfelt welcome to those of you who are joining us now. By being a part of our dream you are using the power of your choices to make the world a better place.

Dreams are the seeds of change. Nothing ever grows without a seed, and nothing ever changes without a dream.
